What is the original name of Jesus?
Jesus' name in Hebrew was “Yeshua” which translates to English as Joshua.
Jesus, which is the name used by most English-speaking people today, is an English transliteration of a Germanic adaptation, of a Latin transliteration, of a Greek transliteration of an originally Hebrew name, that is simply Yeshua.
Because the New Testament was originally written in Greek, not Hebrew or Aramaic. Greeks did not use the sound sh, so the evangelists substituted an S sound. Then, to make it a masculine name, they added another S sound at the end. The earliest written version of the name Jesus is Romanized today as Iesous.
In Luke 1, the archangel Gabriel tells Mary (or Miriam) to name her son Yeshua, meaning “salvation.” An angel also tells Joseph, “you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matt 1:21-22) Much like other Hebrew names, it was His calling and destiny from the beginning.
All occurrences of Yeshua in the Hebrew Bible are in 1 Chronicles 24:11, 2 Chronicles 31:15, Ezra, and Nehemiah where it is transliterated into English as Jeshua.
Jehovah (/dʒɪˈhoʊvə/) is a Latinization of the Hebrew יְהֹוָה Yəhōwā, one vocalization of the Tetragrammaton יהוה (YHWH), the proper name of the God of Israel in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. The Tetragrammaton יהוה is considered one of the seven names of God in Judaism and the personal name of God in Christianity.
Jesus Christ, as Jehovah, established Heavenly Father's everlasting gospel on the earth in every dispensation of time in order to gather in every one of God's children who were lost. Our faith in Jesus Christ can be strengthened as we come to recognize His unchanging nature and His everlasting gospel.
It is no coincidence that Jesus' name is Yeshua, Hebrew for “Yahweh Saves.” And with that name, Jesus declared that He is also Yahweh Elohim Yeshua. In a divinely timed exchange with Peter, He asked a simply question, “Who do you say I am?”
: god sense 1a. used especially by the ancient Hebrews compare tetragrammaton.
The "Feast of the Circumcision of our Lord" is a Christian celebration of the circumcision, eight days (according to the Semitic and southern European calculation of intervals of days) after his birth, the occasion on which the child was formally given his name, Jesus, a name derived from Hebrew meaning "salvation" or ...
Did the name Jesus exist before Jesus?
Yes. It is the Greek transliteration (because the New Testament was written in Greek) of Joshua.
- Savior. “For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe” (1 Timothy 4:10).
- Redeemer. ...
- Bread of Life. ...

- Creator. ...
- Son of the Living God. ...
- Only Begotten Son. ...
- Beloved Son.
The Name YHWH. God's name in the Hebrew Bible is sometimes elohim, “God.” But in the vast majority of cases, God has another name: YHWH.
Jesus had no middle name. “Christ" is not His last name, instead it's the title signifying that He is the Messiah. The naming customs of the place and time were different than they are today. His full name would have been “Jesus, son of Joseph the Nazarene.”
The Old Testament reveals YHWH (often vocalized with vowels as "Yahweh" or "Jehovah") as the personal name of God, along with certain titles including El Elyon and El Shaddai.
Although Christian scholars after the Renaissance and Reformation periods used the term Jehovah for YHWH, in the 19th and 20th centuries biblical scholars again began to use the form Yahweh.
English translations of the Bible generally render YHWH as "Jehovah" in several locations, while replacing the name altogether as "the LORD" (in small capitals), and Adonai as "Lord" (in normal case). In a few cases, where "Lord YHWH" (Adonai YHWH) appears, the combination is written as "Lord GOD" (Adonai elohim).
The Aramaic word for God is אלהא Elāhā ( Biblical Aramaic) and ܐܠܗܐ Alāhā ( Syriac), which comes from the same Proto- Semitic word (* ʾil-) as the Arabic and Hebrew terms; Jesus is described in Mark 15:34 as having used the word on the cross, with the ending meaning "my", when saying, "My God, my God, why hast Thou ...
Jehovah, artificial Latinized rendering of the name of the God of Israel. The name arose among Christians in the Middle Ages through the combination of the consonants YHWH (JHVH) with the vowels of Adonai (“My Lord”).
This form, sometimes called the “plural of majesty,” emphasizes that the God of Israel is “the one true God of the universe.” The names El and Elohim set the God of Israel in stark contrast with the false gods of other nations, proclaiming them counterfeit and stating that he is the one true God.
Is it right to pray in Jesus name?
Jesus repeatedly taught His disciples to pray in His name (John 14:13–14; 15:16; 16:23–24). To pray in Jesus' name is to acknowledge that our access to God in prayer comes only through Jesus. As sinners, we are separated from God and have lost fellowship with Him.
Jesus is called the "son of God," and followers of Jesus are called, "Christians." As applied to Jesus, the term is a reference to his role as the Messiah, or Christ, the King chosen by God.
Hebrew script is an abjad, so that the letters in the name are normally consonants, usually expanded as Yahweh in English. Modern Jewish culture judges it forbidden to pronounce this name. In prayers it is replaced by the word Adonai ("My Lord"), and in discussion by HaShem ("The Name").
In translations of the Hebrew Bible into Ancient Greek, Iēsoûs was used to represent the Hebrew/Aramaic name Yeshua, a derivation of the earlier Hebrew Yehoshua, or Joshua. Both names mean 'Yah saves'. As a result, it is a commonly accepted fact within academia that Jesus' native Hebrew/Aramaic name was Yeshua.
Moses, Samuel, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah and other luminaries of Hebrew history gladly spoke of and called upon God as YHWH. At some point in Israel's later history, however, the rabbis concluded that God's personal name was too transcendent for humans to pronounce.
The answer that the biblical story gives is Jesus, Immanuel, God With Us. The reference to this name comes from the prophet Isaiah who first foretold of a virgin or young women conceiving and bearing a child. As the prophet says, this child will be named “Immanuel” (Isa. 7:14).
God gave Jesus his name. Our scripture verse says Jesus was given his name because he would save his people from their sins. How did Jesus save us from our sins? (Jesus died on the cross and rose from death to save us from our sins.)
